Research Highlights-The Research and Development, and Outlook of Advanced Technology

With the various science and technology development such as computers and semiconductors, big data and so on, the development and application of artificial intelligence (AI), advanced manufacturing, and innovative materials have become extensive. National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) is a comprehensive university. The faculty and students possess strong capacity in research and development (R&D) across a wide range of disciplines. The technology development and application such as in AI, materials, and manufacturing are taking place university wide in the daily R&D work of the teachers and students. This issue of the e-newspaper will introduce five professors with outstanding research achievements in the fields of science, engineering, electrical engineering and computer science, and biotechnology. They will lead teams in AI transformation, advanced materials, and industry innovative technologies. The research outcome of the five professors and teams are: (1) Professor Sheng-Yuan Chu, Department of Electrical Engineering: The Development of Lead-Free Piezoelectric MEMS Triaxial Accelerometer System for Safety Monitoring of Unmanned Vehicles, injecting smart aviation elements; (2) Professor Chung-Chan Hung, Department of Civil Engineering: Sustainable ultra-high performance concrete, simulation and optimization of the concrete 3D printing process, opens up new vision for construction materials; (3) Professor Tzong-Yueh Chen, Department of Biotechnology and Bioindustry Sciences: Intelligent production system of aquatic fry, lowering the operation costs; (4) Multilevel photosensing memory for Visible Light Communication (VLC), creating next generation of network communication; (5) Associate Professor Ming-Hao Liu, Physics Department, How thick is graphene? Rediscovering condensed matter physics. The research outcomes of these advanced technologies increase the imagination of future technology applications, and also enhances people’s quality of life, lowers operation costs for industries, and provides important contributions to the sustainability of society and industry developments. Some of these outcomes are exhibitions of cross countries or cross industry team collaborations, and are the best models for cross domain partner relationships and knowledge application.
